5 Things to Do to Protect Teens That Are Using Facebook

Advertisers on Facebook sometimes market products or services that aren't appropriate for young teens. There are steps adults can take to shield kids. Here are five.

#1: Check the Age Setting

Facebook can't protect kids if it thinks the kids are adults. In a 2013 survey, the United Kingdom's Advertising Standards Authority found that 20 of 24 kids aged 11 to 15 had lied about their age on a social-media site. Have the child sign into Facebook, go to the profile's 'About' page and edit the birth year if it is incorrect. Check such sensitive settings regularly.

#2: Make Sure a Child Knows What It Means to 'Like' an Ad

Some ads allow users to like the Facebook page connected to the ad. A user who likes the ad will get updates from the page, will be listed on Facebook as a fan of the page, and could have his or her name included in future versions of the ad. One click can have repercussions.

#3: It's Never Too Late to 'Unlike'

Users can always unlike pages and disconnect apps. To see what a teen has liked, go to the profile page, then click 'More,' 'Likes,' and 'Other Likes.' Hover over the upper-right corner and a pop-up box should appear, with an option to 'Unlike.' To see a teen's apps, go back to Facebook's main page, click on 'Apps' on the left side of the news feed and help the teen disconnect those he or she doesn't like or use.

#4: Report Inappropriate Ads

Facebook says it seeks community input, and teens or parents can flag ads they think are inappropriate. Click the little 'X' or down arrow at the top right of the ad, click 'I don't want to see this,' click 'It's offensive or inappropriate,' and click the reason. This can be done on a smartphone, too.

#5: Talk About 'Free' Games

Ads for free game downloads are often shown to teens on Facebook. Liking those ads connects users to a page where they can download the game--and possibly much more. A bundle of software is often left on the user's computer for programs that are unwanted or invasive.
